‍When should my son come in if he is hybrid?

For our Hybrid athletes at VeloU, we advise scheduling their in-person training sessions at the facility on the more intense days of the week. Specifically, Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the three most demanding training days. Therefore, we recommend that Hybrid athletes plan their 1-2 in-person training days on any combination of these three days to optimize their training experience and results. This approach ensures that athletes make the most of their time at the facility and align their in-person training with the most rigorous aspects of their program. What does off season throwing look like?At VeloU, our off-season throwing philosophy is deeply rooted in aligning with the athlete's upcoming Spring playing schedule. Typically, after an athlete wraps up their annual playing schedule, they take a few weeks off from throwing to allow their bodies to recover. Upon resuming throwing activities, the athlete embarks on a gradual process of building arm volume. As the volume of throwing increases, the athlete transitions into the velo-building phase, which features an undulating schedule, allowing for variations in throwing intensity and volume. The culmination of the velo-building phase marks the onset of the positional-specific throwing focus, aimed at introducing new movements and intensities tailored to the athlete's role. Prior to the commencement of the Spring playing season, athletes participate in several Live At-Bat sessions. These sessions provide valuable exposure to competitive scenarios, priming them for peak performance as their season officially kicks off. Our approach ensures that athletes are prepared and well-rounded, maximizing their readiness for the upcoming season.

Each training day is structured with a well-defined sequence of activities. It all kicks off with a 15-minute warm-up session. After the throwing segment, there's a dedicated arm care phase, generally lasting 15 to 20 minutes. The day concludes with a weightlifting session, which typically spans from 40 to 75 minutes. This comprehensive schedule results in each training day lasting anywhere from 90 to 160 minutes. On average, you can expect each day to take around 120 minutes. This systematic approach ensures athletes receive a well-balanced and effective training experience. ‍

Facilities & Equipment

‍Should my son be using weighted balls?

VeloU's weighted ball recommendation is tailored to athletes aged 15 and above who have not experienced serious arm injuries in the past. The primary objective of using weighted balls is to introduce a unique training stimulus distinct from standard baseballs. The diverse weights of these balls generate varying stimuli, encouraging the body to explore new positions and movement patterns. For younger athletes, who are still in the developmental stages and learning how their bodies move, introducing these additional stresses may not be necessary. Weighted balls place a specific form of stress on the body that might not be suitable for younger athletes. Hence, our approach is to prioritize their growth and development over introducing the complexities of weighted ball training. This ensures a safe and effective training environment for all athletes.

Individual Needs & Progress

expand_more

‍How does the program address individual needs and progress?

‍In terms of the throwing aspect, each athlete receives a personalized set of drills meticulously chosen by their coach. These drills are tailored to address specific mechanical deficiencies that require attention. On the performance and arm care front, our athletes undergo regular testing using force plates and arm care units. The results of these bi-weekly assessments, coupled with the athlete's proximity to their competitive season, determine the areas that need focus. Here, the coach plays a pivotal role in prescribing the necessary performance training and arm care regimen for each individual.

expand_more

‍How do you measure progress?

At VeloU, we place a strong emphasis on regular athlete testing to monitor their progress and safety. Bi-weekly testing encompasses a range of evaluations, including assessments on force plates and arm care devices, as well as performance testing such as sprinting and jumping. This comprehensive testing regimen ensures that our athletes are not only advancing in their training but also doing so in a secure and carefully monitored manner. Our commitment to regular assessment plays a crucial role in the development and well-being of our athletes.

Program Success & Feedback
